A Couple Firsts

>> Thursday, March 18, 2010

We recently signed Lucas up for Karate classes. We had been talking about the idea for awhile and wanted him to have some sort of physical outlet. I like the idea of Karate because of the self-discipline and the mental focus it teaches the kids. And I kinda like that he would be able to defend himself if anyone ever tried to hurt him. But mostly, he needs an outlet for all the energy and this seemed like a good fit. The first class went great. It was a private lesson with the head instructor and Lucas loved it so we signed him up. Well, his first time in the big class went not-so-well. He was scared and nervous and wouldn't let me leave his side. Hubby (and me too) was worried that maybe this wasn't his thing. But he did better the second class and the third class was even better. He has even progressed so much that they gave him his first belt!! Now, to be fair, they give every kid this belt who gets a good home report card (being obedient, etc...) and participates in class. But after how stressful the first group class was, I wasn't sure we would get even to there. I couldn't be prouder of my little Karate-Kid! I am proud of him for sticking to it even when it was scary and hard. Watching him do the little kicks and punches and other exercises in class brings a huge grin to my face. Just look at that sweet little face!!

His first karate belt!! (Doesn't he kinda look like Luke Skywalker in this picture?)

Another first... Caden got his first haircut today. I had trimmed it a bit myself but he had never had an actual cut... until today. He sat still for a few minutes but then I had to keep him distracted so she could finish the cut. The result... my baby doesn't look much like a baby anymore. He is getting so big so fast.
What a sweet little baby toddler!

And one more first.... I have started running. Well, I guess I should use the word "running" loosely. I am doing the Couch-to-5K training program, trying really hard to keep motivated and stay on track. I am on week 3 and so far am pretty proud of how I am sticking to it. I have a bad record with things like this, so somewhere deep down I don't expect myself to finish this (another reason I wanted Lucas to stick it out with Karate and learn that le. But I have registered and paid for a 5K on June5th so hopefully that will keep me motivated. I am really trying to do this, people! I am planning to wean Caden this summer (bye-bye breastfeeding calorie-burning!) and I have seen the poundage already start to creep up and I am not happy with it. I gotta do something!

So there you have it... a couple key firsts for all of us. :)

Scary Spice or Posh Spice...
I think maybe a mix of both. I am adjusting to the extreme shortness but still think it is about an inch outside my comfort zone. What do you think?

We are going out of town for the weekend, so I may not have internet access. So if I don't "talk" to you before- Happy Valentine's Day, Y'all! May you love and be loved fully and recklessly this year!

It will Grow

>> Monday, February 9, 2009

I have at least a half-a-dozen things I need to blog about and catch y'all up on. But, I have been sick and both boys (all three, really) have been sick so this mama is T-I-R-E-D!
So to bed I go... hooray for margin!

But I did want to tell y'all about my less than perfect haircut today. I went in with this picture (on right), wanting something new and fresh. I was so done with wearing a ponytail everyday. Unfortunately, the stylist got a little scissor-happy and my hair is SUPER SHORT!! I have gone short before but never this short. It is right about my jawline. I am sure the cut she did is a good one, I was just not prepared for it to be this short. I am adjusting still and this one will take a little while. I will eventually take some pics and post them. But, I need to adjust a little first. We are going out of town this weekend to visit some good friends and I wanted to look chic. Now I look like a kid who got a hold of mommy's scissors and played hairdresser.
OK, maybe it isn't that bad. It does make my neck look long and my cheek-bones pop. I am such a super model! :) A super model with a VERY SHORT haircut. Oh well, it will grow.

And if you are reading this on Tuesday, please pray with me that Caden is taking a bottle from Grandma today. More on this battle later.... now I must take my pixie-hair and go to bed. :)

Weekend Update

>> Saturday, June 21, 2008

I had my second Wheaton French market of the season today and it was... GREAT!! My first attempt a month ago was a little less than stellar but today was a lot of fun. We even had a 15min. downpour in the morning but then the sun came out and I had my biggest selling day ever!! Praise God!! I have been getting a little down recently about the whole sling business thing but today was just the burst of energy I needed. I had a blast!

Other news...
I got my hair chopped...again!! I have been wanting to do it for awhile but decided to wait until after my sister-in-law's wedding. I found some gift cards (probably over 3yrs. old- but still good!) to this ritzy salon when cleaning out Lucas' closet recently. So Wednesday night, I made a last-minute appointment and got a super-fancy haircut. It was fun to feel pampered for an hour or so. (I am currently experiencing camera problems but will post pics as soon as they are resolved.)

Also, we have gone in with some friends on a subscription to a local CSA. We picked up our first vege box on Thursday and have been having fun thinking of new recipes using veges I have barely heard of. Anyone know of a good recipe using Rainbow Swiss Chard? I have heard it is kinda like spinach so I may try to use it in a lasagna or something this week. It is fun and something new. Plus, it makes me feel like I am actually doing the right thing for my family. The environment too, I guess. After picking up our box, I felt in such an "organic" kind of mood that Lucas and I went out to dinner at this awesome organic restaurant nearby. Hubby was working late so Lucas and I just sat and had an amazing meal complete with organic cinnamon toast muffins for dessert (and the next morning's breakfast). After dinner we walked around the downtown area and watched a few trains pass by. Lucas went to bed a little late but we were both having so much fun I just couldn't help it. It was a very cool evening.

This is a pic (using my video camera) of some salmon we grilled tonight using some of the fresh dill from our CSA box. SO yummy!!
So there you have it, my own little weekend update. :) Kinda random, huh?

A rite of passage of sorts

>> Thursday, November 15, 2007

Lucas' first haircut!! After months of arguing with hubby about it, I saw the picture of him wearing his turkey in the sling and realized he needed a haircut. And with family pics scheduled for this weekend, today was the day. He sat in a cute little car and watched a trains DVD. He sat more still than I have ever seen him and was the perfect little salon-goer. He got a certificate and a balloon and an official pic and a baggie of his hair. A momentous day for sure!!
The certificate should have read "Lucas Brown's last day as a baby; his mommy is a little sad but she's trying not to cry. It is just a haircut." But is is more than that to me. As we walked out of the salon, he looked up at me and said "Thank you, mommy" as if on cue. I couldn't keep the tears away after that. Is it lame to cry at your kid's first haircut? If so, guilty as charged. My baby is a little boy. My handsome little boy!!
