Here, There, and Everywhere

>> Thursday, April 9, 2009

I have been all over the place lately... doing five million different things. The biggest? My new blog/website DupageMamas. I started this site with a friend to give moms in our community a new voice. It is a place for moms to connect with other local moms and to share resources and help each other with this task of raising our kids. I am super-excited about it and we are already getting some good buzz. Our official launch is next Wednesday the 15th and we are kicking things off with a week of straight giveaways! Come check us out and help me feel like all this work I have put into it has been worth the time! :)

I have also been busy contributing here about my recent itch (don't worry, not THAT kind of itch....)

And here (at my other new home, Chicagonista) about Lucas' birthday and our cool find in downtown Wheaton.

Plus it is Holy Week, and I am trying (keyword=trying) to build time into my day for reflection and quiet. Maybe more on that tomorrow.

Oh, and if I don't say it enough. If you are here and reading my blog and sharing in my motherhood journey. Thank you. I value all of you and the therapy that this blog provides me.

Peace to you.

It's Just Preschool... Right?

>> Thursday, March 19, 2009

We have been on a journey around here lately... o.k., more than one. But the one I am stressing about right now is the preschool journey. Which one? Which type? How much can we afford? What is important? How do I judge them against each other? Blah, blah, blah.... My mind is officially muddled and I seem to be incapable of making any decision much less the right one. I have made charts, talked it over with hubby and my parents and my friends,... We are getting closer to a decision, I think. Who would have thought this decision would be SO TOUGH?!?!

I am talking more about this journey over here today. Any words of wisdom/encouragement are much appreciated. Maybe you can help me clear the fog so that the perfect preschool path becomes clear... 'cuz right now it is clear as mud!

All Bottled Up

>> Thursday, February 12, 2009

I posted yesterday at Chicago Moms Blog about my recent battles with Caden over taking the bottle. Plain and simple, he won't do it. No matter who tries, how much you distract or coax, the little bugger refuses to cooperate. I am really at the point of not knowing what to do next. Cereal helps, he is kinda learning how to take a sippy cup. But otherwise, he screams until mommy gets home to fill his tummy. What can I do? Please, I would love to hear any suggestions or encouragement that you many have. Even though Caden is stubbornly refusing anything that is not mama, I am still pumping at work in hopes that he will soon change his mind. Like most pumping moms, I pump into bottles then transfer the milk into breast milk storage bags to put in the freezer. When it is time to use the milk, I thaw the storage bag and pour the milk into the bottle or into the bowl for making cereal. If you have ever done this, you notice that there is always some lipid residue left over on the bottle or the bag. That is some of the milk fat, one of the parts that makes breast milk so fabulously nutritious. So the more you transfer, the more fatty goodness you lose.
.
.
The MilkBank Vacuum Storage System for breast milk is the latest fancy-schmancy way to store and serve your pumped milk. You pour your freshly pumped milk into their bottles then use their patented vacuum pump to vacuum seal the bottle in order to optimize the freshness and nutrition. Pretty cool, huh? The bottles can be stored in the fridge or frozen for longer storage. When you are ready to give the milk to baby, you can put a nipple right on that bottle and warm and serve thus eliminating an unnecessary transfer and preserving that fatty goodness for your baby. Using the vacuum pump increases the amount of time you can safely store the milk, keeping it fresher longer. And fresh is good. These bottles are easy to use, easy to clean, free of any harmful chemicals, and research-proven to keep pumped milk as close to fresh-from-the-boob quality for longer. Can't ask for much more than that. Except that the baby would actually drink the milk... hmmmm....
.
The coolest thing about this new Milk Bank system, though, is their insulated bottle. It is an outer bottle that you fill with warm water and screw onto the bottle. This keeps the milk at the optimal temperature improving nutrient ingestion. I love that you can freeze the bottles and then just warm and feed from the same container. My only complaint is that I wish they had made the bottles more of a standard size so you could just attach them to your pump and eliminate all transferring.
.
.
Now I have an awesome way to store and serve my pumped milk.... now, how to get the baby to drink it??? Help!!
.
Addendum:
Oh, and by the way... the folks at MilkBank have given me one of their vacuum systems and bottles to give away. Just leave a comment here and make sure I have a way to contact you if you win. Contest is open until Tuesday the 17th at 5pm and the winner will be chosen at random later in the day. Subscribe to me and leave another comment letting me know for another entry. Filtering Disney

>> Saturday, January 24, 2009

Come join in the discussion over here today about the language our kids are exposed to in programming intended for kids. It frustrates me that Disney movies and other kids shows are not more careful about the language they choose. Should we have to filter Disney?

Murphy's Law for Moms

>> Tuesday, November 25, 2008

With yesterday's ranting off my chest, I am moving on to some of the other quite interesting predicaments we sometimes find ourselves in as mothers. Sometimes it is almost as if the cards are stacked against us...
What if Murphy was a mother? His law would probably sound quite different...
Check out my most recent post over at Chicago Moms Blog for more. And feel free to add your own to the list...

Wordful Wednesday

>> Wednesday, November 5, 2008

This is my first time every participating in one of these little weekly carnivals, but this picture was too precious not to share. This picture was taken at our small, local petting zoo on a warm 70degree Halloween morning. It is November and still 70degrees outside. Too good to be true- we get snow on Friday. But we will enjoy it today while it lasts.

My sweet little Caden, with your baby blue eyes and perfectly chubby cheeks!! You truly light up my life!
And if anyone asks, you are a "good" baby.... I am talking about that over here today.

And don't forget about the online sling party going on until Friday night... get an awesome discount on my new fall slings!

I recently posted over at Chicago Moms Blog about one of those neccesary evils of motherhood. I got notified today that the post has been picked up for syndication and will possibly appear on several news and parenting blogs across the country. Kinda fun! If you have a free minute, check it out.

And in case you are like me and can't get enough of these smiling little faces, here is a pre-halloween preview of the 2 main reasons why I do what I do. I would do just about anything for my boys!

Gimme a break

>> Friday, July 25, 2008

I had a nice little outing with the girls last night for fondue. Even though we talked about pregnancy and kids most of the time, it was still nice to get out of the house and have some brownie smoothered in melted chocolate. I need those little escapes now and then. I think everyone does.

And even when I can't actually get away, I take little mental vacations. My recent vacation spot of choice.. Project Runway. Yes, the obsession has returned. I am talking more about that here today.

How do you escape and let your mommy-brain take a breather?

Sex and the City... counting down the days!!

>> Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I can't tell you how excited I am for the Sex and the City movie coming in just a few short weeks. I watched the show religiously, still do when I can catch the late-night re-runs. It is like my little escape from reality into this fun world of friendship and romance and amazing fashion.

I love it for many reasons but mostly because I love the dynamics between these four woman who are so different yet share so much.

I love their honesty. I love how they share EVERYTHING with each other, no matter how potentially embarrassing or how it may make them look. I love that they share the good and the bad and the kinky. I love that they bounce things off each other without being afraid of looking stupid or uninformed. They have their opinions and stick to them no matter what their friends think. They are four very different, very independent women who depend on each other for everything.

Is the show really about sex? Kinda. But not really. It is more about relationships and all that comes in that territory. It is such a great picture to me of friendship, truly sharing their lives with each other and walking together through whatever life throws at them - men, babies, infertility, cancer, marriage, .... You name it. They deal and they deal together. I love it.

I, for one, will see the movie as soon as I can get my 7-month pregnant self to a theater.... Hopefully sometime Friday night (opening night). I have been counting the days. Even hubby wants to go. He loves it too even though he may not openly admit it. :)

Can't wait for the movie? Need a little sex talk today? Check out
Chicago Moms Blog and all the sister sites! Here is my post if you are interested. A topic day about sex.... count me in!

My genius child??

>> Saturday, April 12, 2008

*Disclaimer: This post is full of thoughts from a proud mommy. Continue at your own discretion*

It is innate in all m
others to think their child is a genius. "You should see little Johnny color a picture....he is an art genius." "You should hear little Mary say her ABC's... what a whiz!" If mothers did not think their children were the center of the universe, would we continue to pick macaroni up off the floor and wipe dirty bottoms and put away the same toys for the millionth time? It is one of God's ways of continuing the species. He gives all mothers the ability to see their children for the great things they do and the great things they will do someday. All mothers think their children are cute and smart and destined for greatness. But what if they really are? How do you know?

All children, all people have their own areas where they excel above the general population. I am not gifted in art, but I have a
very talented friend who is. I have another friend who always has something witty and thought-provoking to say, but that is not me. One kid may be really good at math while the next is a football star in the making. I have always known that one of my jobs as a mother was to discern the areas in which Lucas is naturally gifted and encourage his growth and development in those areas. I also think it is my job to expose him to lots of different things, some that he may not have a natural aptitude for, so that he can grow and learn and be well-rounded. But that being said, I am right now pondering the former mommy responsibility more than the later.

Lucas is a whiz at puzzles. He really is. I don't know when or how it started but for at least the last year, one of his favorite activities is to sit down with a puzzle and just figure it out. He just turned two and can sit (almost) independently with a 24 piece wooden jigsaw puzzle meant for ages 4+ and figure it out over the course of just a few minutes. It is kind of amazing to watch. He also seems to have a knack for language. He is far advanced for his age in terms of vocabulary and ability to construct sentences. He could spell his name at 18months and already uses more abstract words/concepts such as "backwards" and "probably." When I tell him the plan for the day he says, "Good idea, mommy. Sounds good to me."

Here is the dilemma: How do we as mothers draw the line between natural mommy-pride and legitimate potential for genius? How do we determine if it is truly an area of
giftedness or just an aspect of his development that occurred at a faster rate and will level out at some point? Are the areas of "faster development" actually areas of giftedness that if nurtured could become something truly great? Should I be figuring out ways to nurture whatever part of his brain it is that makes him good at puzzles at such a young age?

You hear of these violin prodigy children that can play in world class symphonies by age 5. Those mothers started their children in violin training from the first day they could hold the bow. Or those kids who finish Harvard by the time their peers are starting t-ball. How did that mom know her kid was gifted in that way and how did she nurture it? I am NOT saying I think Lucas is destined to finish college before puberty or play in a symphony by age 10. But, I am saying I think I am getting a glimpse of his area of
giftedness and I want to know where to go from here. I don't want to miss this chance to help him develop this natural strength and have it possibly turn into something really great.

It is not easy to ask your friends for advice on how to nurture a gifted child. People often laugh it off as "of course she thinks he is brilliant." But maybe he really
is. Maybe he is destined to win the Nobel Prize or become an architectural genius. Why not? And how will we ever know unless I give him that chance? But how do I do that?

What is your child great at and how do you nurture that in them? I would really love to know.

Coping with the Unknown

>> Thursday, March 6, 2008

Coping with illness, either yours or a loved one's, is hard enough when you know what you are facing. But when the hardship you are fighting won't show its face and be named, it is a whole other battle. So many women have stories like this, but here is bit of mine.

It was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving 2003 when my husband and I went in for our 20wk. ultrasound with our first child. Our anticipation and excitement was burst like a balloon when we were told that there were significant issues with the baby including a diaphragmatic hernia and we should consider termination. This wasn't an option for us so we started to research other potential treatments on our own. Tragically, when our son was born at 41weeks, his problems were more severe than we had anticipated and no one was able to help him. We had him for three days and then he went to be with Jesus. But this was not the end of our battle. It was really only the beginning of the testing and endless consults to try and figure out what happened to my little boy. We got very mixed messages. "It was random." "It is genetic." "Get pregnant right away." "Never have children." What is a grieving mama supposed to do?

Due to the lack of consistent messages and the severity of my son's problems, we felt stuck. We wanted more kids but didn't know what risk we would be taking by getting pregnant again. I would describe it to people this way: If someone handed you a pair of dice and said you can roll these and you may win the jackpot but you may also die, would you roll them? Lucky for me, God took that decision out of my hands and I got pregnant again in July 2005. I lived in fear for the first 20wks., waiting for that ultrasound when we would know what our fate held. Joyfully, my now two year old son is healthy and rambunctious as the next kid. But fatefully, I now find myself pregnant again. Definitely not in my plan, but true non-the-less. And the fear is no less real now that I have one healthy child. Now 16weeks, I have a month to go until we can better know what path we are on this time.

Maybe my husband and I are carriers for a rare and fatal genetic illness that multiple rounds of genetic testing have not been able to find. And maybe it was one of those horrible random things that sometimes happen but can never be explained. No one knows, much less me. So I live my life coping with the unknown. And much like with other illnesses, known and unknown, the medical community sits baffled. I have a friend who is waiting to hear if the mysterious tingling and numbness in her toes is Lupus or anxiety or just toddler-induced-sleep-deprivation related. That is a wide array of explanations. You would think the experts would be able to narrow it down a bit for her. And maybe they will eventually. But for now she sits, coping with the symptoms and the anxiety of her unknown illness. And much like in this story, many of us find ourselves having to learn to cope on our own because the doctors and specialists have left us here. They can't help because they don't know what we are dealing with. The truly unfortunate thing about unknown illness is that even if the diagnosis and the treatment are a mystery, the symptoms are no less real and life-altering.

Coping with unknown illness brings anxiety and lots of uncertainty. Do your own research, don't be afraid to ask questions, don't necessarily accept all medical advice you are given, trust your own instincts.... but if all that leaves you right where you started, try not to get discouraged. The only way I have found to truly cope is to lean on my friends and family and trust that no matter the outcome they will be there to walk through it with me. And boy am I grateful for them this time around more than ever before.
This is a bit of my story. What is yours?

Karma bit me in the....

>> Wednesday, February 27, 2008

I'm sure none of you have ever done the following bad deed, but I did last week and it came back to bite me.

I was sitting in our pediatrician's waiting room with my very sick two year old and I saw a magazine I had been wanting to read. Only once in his life has being sick slowed him down so I was too busy chasing him around keeping him from pulling all the tissues out of the boxes to glance at the magazine. One article in particualr caught my eye and peaked my interest so I grabbed the magazine and stuck it in the diaper bag (GASP!!). In my defense, they had at least 4 copies of the same issue laying on the table. Also, in the past I have wanted to read an article I saw and was told by my pediatrician that it was o.k. to take it with me. But, this time I didn't ask for permission. I just stuffed it in my bag so that I could read it later. (I know...GASP!!)

Well, I didn't have a chance to read it before I traveled to my parents' house so I again stuffed the magazine in my carry-on. When I finally had a chance to sit down and read it at my mom's, I checked the table of contents, turned to the page where the article was reported to be, but no article. I flipped a couple pages in either direction and then I noticed that someone had torn out those pages and left the magazine sitting on the waiting room table! How dare they!!!! Twarted!!

So the magazine I stole to read a specific article had already been raided by a fellow mother who was a bit more slick than me. Furthermore, how unlucky am I that the one copy I chose to steal was the one missing the one article I was stealing it for. I mean, can you imagine the nerve of that mom to tear out those pages there in the waiting room where all could see and hear her!! At least my crime was quiet and non-property-destroying. I am obviously not the only magazine/article stealing mother out there...there is at least one more who is probably sitting at home now contently reading MY article.

I got bit by karma...right in the a**! Now I have to go buy the magazine so I can read the article and hopefully appease the karma gods. :)

Real men wear pink

>> Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Lucas found this pink swim vest at my mom's house this morning. It was shipped to her by mistake when we ordered some beach apparel for Lucas last summer and we decided just to save it for, well, whatever. Lucas insisted on wearing this pink and purple bikini with floatie vest around the house. He wore it for about an hour or so and when I took it off he had dark rings around his thighs where it was digging into his skin. But, he had a ball and didn't seem to care that pink is not his color.... or is it?
Bono watch out!! Lucas Brown in the house!! Only the coolest of the cool wear their glasses upside down!

Plus, not to toot my horn but.... I just joined the Chicago Mom' s Blog and I have my first post up there today! I feel a little famous and a bit intimidated but a lot excited. :)
