Puddles!!

>> Sunday, May 29, 2011

The only thing that little boys might like better than mud is puddles. Well, it is a pretty close tie. And the only thing that redeems rainy weather (again, for little boys- I personally love the rain!) is going out afterwards and stomping in the biggest, splashy-est puddle you can find!

And with lots of rain and puddles comes lots of worms. Lucas used his best 5yr old powers of persuasion to convince me that this particular worm needed to come home with us and be our pet. "He is small, quiet, and only eats dirt. He won't bother you one bit." We compromised and brought him into our backyard to live near one of our trees. And as Lucas dug him a hole and gently placed in the worm in the dirt, he wished the worm "happy times, little guy!"

And when you put put mud and puddles and worms all together in one spot... well, you get two very happy boys and one very smiley mama. When we got home and peeled off all the muddy clothes (in the garage), Caden says "tanks for de ab-venture, mommy." Makes any amount of muddy clothes worth it.

Spring Pics

>> Tuesday, April 26, 2011

I have been doing a lot of talking lately.. well last week anyway. I thought I would even it out by sharing some spring pics. All these pics have been in the last week. But then again, spring is just barely making an appearance around here anyway.

I fortuitously won a free session with an amazing local photographer (Lunel Photography). I have only seen a few of the pictures so far, but they are just awesome! These are pictures that our family will treasure for years to come. I feel so, so blessed!!

A very cold "spring" picnic at Micah's tree on his birthday. Some of my wonderful friends joined me and we managed to brave the cold for an hour+. It was a great way to celebrate Micah and all the other blessings I have in my life.

My sweet niece Gracie wearing the little bunny hat I got for her on Easter.

My neice Emilee munching on Easter candy. Don't you just love her eyes! She is such a doll!!

Caden in the egg hunt in Grandma's basement.

Daddy and his boys on Easter Sunday

Another from our session with LunelPhotography- once I get the CD of all the images, I will share more. I just wanted to show off their cute Easter ties. :)

It did warm up a bit on Sunday. Enough for me to get in a long run and have some time to sit outside with the boys and play with bubbles. We were all grateful for a relaxing Easter and some nice time together as a family. We even grilled some steaks for our non-traditional Easter dinner.
Micah's tree- on the verge of bloom. I truly love spring!
(I just wish it were a bit warmer and drier this year!)

Off Guard

>> Thursday, April 15, 2010

The calender and the weather tell me that it is April. March has come and gone, Lucas has turned 4 and I've already had my toes in the sand. Spring is here. The air is warm, the sun is shining and we are emerging from our Chicago-winter hibernation. It is already mid April, and while I am very excited for most of what that brings, I feel like spring is catching me a little off-guard.
I sat out at Micah's tree for awhile today, trying to collect my thoughts. His birthday is next week and I am feeling a bit unprepared. Even sitting out at the tree today, my mind was flooded with all sorts of other things and worries that I couldn't clear away as I tried to intentionally think about deeper things. As I tried to remember. I did have a good cry though. About missing him and about all the other things that seem to be weighing on my mind and heart right now.
(I should not let myself blog when I am in this kind of mood. But, then again, that is kinda why I have this blog- to help me filter my thoughts and figure it all out.)

I am kinda in a "one-day at a time" mode right now which is why next week is coming so fast. I am trying to get things done and stay on top of life all while living it to the fullest. Add in a couple extra challenges (physical and situational) and I am at times just keeping my head above water even before adding in the pressure and emotion of figuring out what grief in year 6 looks like.
(I should have blogged yesterday when it was 80degrees and I played outside with my boys all day and had biscuits and gravy for dinner- it was a great day!! See, I am not always this melancholy.)

Spring is here and I am not quite ready. Micah's tree is staring to bud, and it is so beautiful to me. I have heard that often times it takes a couple season-cycles for new trees to bud, so I am grateful that ours is blooming this first spring. The air is sweet and fresh, just like the new signs of life on the branches. I, however, am a bit flustered, a bit unorganized, a bit off guard. But I am also intent on being intentional in how I live the next few weeks. I will try not be dictated by my to-do list. My heart tells me to shake off the "shoulds" and obligations and see where that takes me. I will say that my week in Florida with no laptop and no phone really made me feel free to enjoy my boys and my downtime in refreshing ways. I want to keep that up. But we'll see how it really goes. Right now, I just need to get my thoughts and "to-do"s in order so that no matter what the next few weeks look like, I am ready.

Welcome, Spring. I am glad your here. I just need to catch up a bit.

Some much needed Sunshine

>> Saturday, April 4, 2009

After yesterday's somewhat "dark" day, we all needed a little bit of sun. Lucky for us, God blessed us with a beautiful Chicago spring day (well, morning at least- it got cold in the afternoon). We took full advantage and ran an errand to the plant nursery and had lunch and park-playtime with some friends. I think all of us needed to exhale and then breathe deep the fresh smell of spring. It was refreshing to the soul. And even though Lucas had a near-meltdown at naptime, it was still a very good day. And I will take them however I can get them. :)

Oh, and one more thing. Thank you to all of you who sent encouraging comments and e-mails my way today. I can always depend on y'all to pick me up out of my slump and give me some fresh perspective. It helped me see that Lucas and I are really doing ok. We have a very special bond, my son and I. And if I can just learn to stay calm when my frustration starts to build, it will go a long way in teaching him how to do the same. And that will make life better for everyone. Thanks y'all. Love to you!

Margin, What Margin?

>> Monday, March 30, 2009

Spring is coming, right? I think it was here for maybe a day or two but decided to hit the snooze button and hide for a few more weeks. We had SNOW this morning, people!!! What in the world!! It's the end of March!!!
While this brutal winter is getting in one last punch (hopefully only one), I have been busily getting ready for all that spring will hold. Birthdays, Easter, preschool applications, French Market preparations, etc... So although I haven't been present here much this week, but I have been a busy little bee. Nothing new around here. And although I talk a big talk about needing more margin, I am hard at work on a new project that I can't wait to announce. I'm just not quite ready yet....
But it is cool, oh so cool! At least I think so! :)

Thawing

>> Saturday, February 7, 2009

It broke 50degrees today, a much needed reprieve from the single digits we have been enduring. While at our local petting zoo with some friends, Lucas could not stop running. He ran non-stop for over half an hour, stopping only to stomp in the puddles from the melting snow. It was refreshing for my mama-heart to see him being a little boy, running free and letting his endless energy reign. He did have a minor meltdown at lunch because his feet were all wet and shriveled from the puddle jumping. Nothing a little frozen custard couldn't fix! I think he inherited his father's borderline-undiagnosed OCD. :)
A day outside did us all some good. These four walls were getting pretty tight. Stress and frustration and impatience run amok when we are so cooped up. Lucas gets cabin-fever and gets naughty. I run out of indoor ideas and grow increasingly impatient with his cabin-fever naughtiness. I am not the mom I want to be and he is not the little boy I know he truly is when neither of us have any outlet.
All-in-all, a great day. I am sure we will return to the cold and the freeze. And the cabin-fever naughtiness too. But for today, we are starting to thaw a bit. And every little bit helps.

Puddle jumpingSo happy to be outside!!
A little finger-painting fun to round out the day!

Here comes the Sun

>> Saturday, April 5, 2008

Today's weather in Chicagoland was like a breath of fresh air... warm, sunny and perfect for a nice spring walk. My family has more reasons than that, though, to stand in the sun and breathe deep. Next summer, hubby will have another boy to hold his other hand. Our ultrasound went well, baby looks healthy, and we are having a boy... our third!! I guess I am destined to be the mother of boys. There are much worse things. :) We are thrilled and relieved and ready to dive into choosing a name. Thanks to all of you who prayed for us and lifted us up. It is what sustained us and got us through one of the scarriest moments of my life. But God, again, showed us His mercy and goodness and has blessed us with another son.

Spring is coming....in so many ways.

Flutters of new life

>> Saturday, March 15, 2008

This week we had our first truly warm spring-like day. This is Lucas early in the week, aching for some outdoor play time. We ventured into the cold and flurries just for a change of pace. (Notice the dusting of snow and the snowsuit...it was NOT warm enough to play outside. But we couldn't wait any longer!) And then, Friday we had temperatures in the 50's and the plants and the kids (and mommies too) couldn't wait to scream "SPRING is HERE!"
The promise of spring and warmer weather has not only brought signs of new life outdoors. Yes, the trees are budding and green is beginning to emerge from the gray. But this week also brought a different kind of "new-life fluttering" for me. I have started feeling the baby move. Just flutters, you know that feeling like your insides are moving around and your organs have all just had a chinese fire drill, but movement none-the-less. It is reassuring and scary all at the same time. Up to this point, even through the nausea and throwing up and the slowly expanded belly, I could attribute those sypmtoms to something other than pregnancy in my head. But feeling this new life start to make himself or herself known makes this seem unignorable.
Our ultrasound is in less than three weeks but I wish it were tomorrow. I have been waiting all winter for this... both spring and the answers about this pregnancy that I desperately need.
For now, the waiting time will hopefully be filled with more days like this one.... beautiful, warm and refreshing to the soul.

Muddy hands...a true sign of spring.

Enjoying the warm weather and time together outside. See the smiles... we SO missed the sun!
